BABA

Directors: Laurence McManus and Judyta Potocka

(Expected release: 2026)

Film Synopsis

Monty is caretaker to his father June who has fallen sick after the disappearance of Baba, their mystical companion. As June’s health worsens, Monty’s resentment for his languishing father grows. His hunting colleague Elma invites him to a performance by a bewitching puppeteer who convinces Monty to give June away and free himself from the burden of caregiving. This act casts Monty into a no-man's-land of shame and leaves him under the rough care of Elma, with Baba's return drawing near.

Behind the Sounds

Since 2025, I’ve been working as composer and lead sound designer for the feature film ‘BABA’.

Collaborating closely with directors Laurence McManus and Judyta Potocka, we’ve crafted the music and sound to fit the film, to exist in the world of BABA. I took on board their vision, to draw the audience into the film’s descent into desperation and absurdity.

Using a combination of acoustic and digital instruments, VSTs, and innovative spectral processing, the music encompasses a wide range of styles, from synth pop to haunting drones and romantic faux jazz. Expect to hear bewildering theremin, intimate piano, synth scapes, and folk melodica.

We made a choice not to use samples for the sound design. Instead, the directors, sound team and I have created a palette of on-set and field recordings, Foley, impulse responses, and synthesis. I’ve been making stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes of the film’s audio, for the different platforms and venues BABA will be screened.
